One man’s ambivalent retreat from his racist past

ROCK HILL, S.C. Elwin Hope Wilson leans back in his recliner, a sad, sickly man haunted by time.
Antique clocks, at least a hundred of them, fill his neat ranch home on Tillman Street. Grandfather clocks, mantel clocks, cuckoos and Westministers, all ticking, chiming and clanging in an hourly cacophony that measures the passing days.
Why clocks? his wife Judy has often asked during their 49 years together.
He shrugs and offers no answer.
You’re old and degrepid and there is no remorse in this man.

Whimsical and sometimes realistic animations such as this one were commonly reproduced mechanically in the Black Forest sence teh early Nineteenth Century. Here, a woman beats her stitching husband over the head with a rolling pin. One strike for each hour. The tailor moves his sewing with the motion of the pendulum.
The scene recalls the Grimm Brothers’ story about the tailor who, with one blow killed seven flies that were gathering around his fresh jam. He was so proud he made a belt and stitched on the lettering “Seven With One Blow.” As he strutted about town with this belt, rumor began to circulate that he had killed seven MEN with one blow.
When the King heard of this he called upon the tailor to solve some problems for him (giants, a dragon, etc.) and in return the taylor’s reward (of course) was to be the Princess’s hand in marriage.
The taylor had several adventures after that, and even managed to outwit every creature that came accross his bath – using brain instead of brawn to achieve his goal. When he returned to the king he settled down with his new wife the Princess and started up his taylor business again.
Imagine the Princess’s displeasure when she found that she hadn’t married a dashing and courageous prince at all. She was stuck with this lowly Taylor!

This charming chalet has been a long-time best seller. It has nice proportions and is beautifully colored. The dancers are animated, as well as the baby deer below. With each cuckoo call they are startled and actually jump up.
New details in this piece include laser-cut windows and beautifully carved deer. The roof has individually hand-laid shingles, and the dial, hands, and bird are all of solid wood. The waterwheel also turns and there are several fine details on this clock – including a “hidden window’ on the side of the clock.
This “Jumping Deer ” cuckoo clock is by Rombach und Haas and is exclusively available through North Coast Imports. It is an Original Black Forest Clock, certified by the VDS.
The clock comes packaged in genuine recycled or renewable materials, each clock made and packaged BY HAND by Black Forest craftsmen the same way they have been for hundreds of years. The bird and dancers move along with the mechanically produced music and cuckoo call.
The sound of the bird is produced by real wooden whistles and the music box movement is hand made in Switzerland .
