Would an antique anniversary clock be a good wedding gift from me to my bride since she doesn’t like jewelry?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

An anniversary clock is one of those glass domed clocks with the rotating pendulums that used to be so ubiquitous in old peoples homes when I was a kid. My parents have one from when they were first married.

It is called an anniversary clock because it only has to be wound once a year… thus, you can always wind it up on your anniversary. The new ones defeat the purpose because they are quartz movement and run on batteries… thus, retardedly, don’t need to be wound…

Only if you write out why you wanted her to have it. Be romantic. It’s a sure winner!

What are the origins of paper or clocks as first anniversary gifts?

Hopefully someone knows the answer. I can’t find it!

1st Wedding Anniversary – Paper
Traditionally the theme is paper which is supposed to symbolize the strength obtained from the interlocking fibres. The modern take on this is a clock for reasons to do with timeless, eternal love. The precious metals/gemstones associated with the first wedding anniversary are gold jewellery, pearls or peridot. The associated colour is gold or yellow and the relevant flower is the orange blossom or pansy.

Does anyone know where I might find a domed anniversary clock that plays a selection of different songs?

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

I used to have one but lost "custody" of it in my divorce. It was bought at Fred Gattas back in the early 90′s. It played songs on the hour. I believe there was a selection of about 12 different ones. Do they still make them with the different song selections?

I’m not sure about anniversary clocks that play different songs. But I know of a place that sells them with the Westminster Melody with quarter hour chimes and hour count, and a Bell Strike hour count with half hour strike.

Those are the only types I know of. You’d think they would make clocks now with a jukebox like setting where you could upload any sound file to play as the hourly chime. If you find a place that has those please let me know.

check my resource for the store with the Westminster clocks.
